Beneath the Behaviour
When Emotions Speak: Unraveling the Why Behind Challenging Behaviour.
By Dr. Krist Ewe
When a child’s behaviour feels hard to contain,
It’s often their feelings they can't quite explain.
Tiredness or hunger, frustration or fear,
Emotions unspoken that we need to hear.
Their brain’s developing, not yet fully wired,
So impulse control can easily be tired.
They crave your attention, a look or a touch,
And when it's not there, they might ask for too much.
Without structure or rules, they spiral away,
Testing the limits, day after day.
Big feelings inside they can’t yet express,
So chaos erupts from emotional stress.
But it’s not just the children who sometimes explode,
Adults, too, carry a heavy, full load.
Our tempers may flare, and our patience wane,
For we, too, have feelings that we struggle to tame.
When we don’t express or manage them right,
Our own behaviours can cause quite a fight.
And when you are tense, they’re the first ones to see,
Your stress fuels their storms, their hearts in a spree.
React with a shout, their instincts take flight,
Their primal brain stirs, in fear or in fight.
May I suggest that emotion coaching is key,
Teaching them early what feelings can be.
From joy to anger, from sadness to fear,
We guide them through each as their mind becomes clear.
By learning together, both children and grown,
We build understanding, and make peace our own.
